Downtown Alpharetta / Garden District

Steeped in a rich history having its beginning as a small village called New Prospect Camp.

Welcome to Downtown Alpharetta / Garden District

The city of Alpharetta is steeped in a rich history having its beginning as a small village called New Prospect Camp which served as an Indian trading post housing a few tents and a log school. The first settlers were drawn to the area by a promise of free Indian lands but were soon followed by farmers and merchants who were the winners of the land lotteries of the 1830s.

In the late 1850s, the camp was recognized by the State of Georgia and was renamed Alpharetta (“alpha” meaning first and “retta” meaning town in Greek). For the most part, Alpharetta was a farming community made up of small, family-owned farms.

Today, Alpharetta is one of the fastest-growing communities in the South and is considered an ideal place for raising families and escaping the more hectic Atlanta lifestyle. The newer incorporated cities of Milton and Johns Creek have been separately incorporated into their own cities, offering two entirely different feels to them. Johns Creek borders on the eastern side towards Duluth, where Milton borders on the western side, past GA400 and bordering Roswell and Cumming.

The real estate market is thriving in this area as new construction neighborhoods continue to grow rapidly. Growth is due in no small part to the proximity to GA400, North Point Mall, growing corporations such as Verizon Wireless, and the birth of many new mixed-use developments. The newly built Verizon Amphitheater is a great place for a concert.
